Rishikesh: The Yoga Capital of India, and Akshi Yogashala’s Vision for the Next Generation of Yoga Teachers

Rishikesh has earned a unique place on the global yoga map. Nestled in the Himalayan foothills beside the sacred Ganga, the city attracts yoga practitioners, spiritual seekers and aspiring teachers from across India and around the world. Uttarakhand Tourism officially describes Rishikesh as the “world capital of yoga and meditation,” highlighting its internationally recognised ashrams, yoga traditions and annual International Yoga Festival.

But within this celebrated yoga destination, a new generation of yoga schools is working to make traditional knowledge relevant to today’s learners. Akshi Yogashala is one such institution, combining traditional yogic practices with contemporary yoga education and teacher-training methodologies.

Located in Rishikesh, Akshi Yogashala offers structured 100-, 200-, 300- and 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training programs. Its curriculum includes Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Pranayama, Meditation and Yoga Philosophy, alongside Yoga Anatomy and teaching methodology.

At the heart of Akshi Yogashala is Vivek Arya, its Founder and a teacher of Yoga Anatomy, Pranayama and Philosophy. According to the school, Vivek spent years studying in ashrams and the Himalayas before dedicating himself to teaching yoga and continuing his academic journey in the field.

This combination of ancient wisdom, modern understanding and practical teacher training is becoming central to Akshi Yogashala’s identity.

If Rishikesh is the Yoga Capital of India, Akshi Yogashala aims to become a place where the next generation of yoga teachers can learn, practise and carry that tradition forward to the world.
